Avic scores LNG-propelled PC
Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding of China turned out to have sealed a contract to build two 15,000 dwt LNG-propelled Product Carriers (PC) with Swedish owner Terntank Places on November 29.
Each of the PC newbuilds is planned for delivery in February and May, 2016, and two options are said to be attached.
To be constructed based on a design of Rolls-Royce, the two PCs will be equipped with Wartsila‘s 5RT-flex50DF LNG hybrid low-speed type engine. Applied with an optimized design, a large propeller is scheduled to be fitted with 14.5 knots of design speed.
In addition, the newbuildings are expected to meet up with IMO III standards with reducing emissions of harmful particles by 90%, nitrogen oxide by 80%, carbon dioxide by 35% and so on.
Terntank said that the 15,000 dwt newbuild will be capable of operating in 14.5 knots speed only with 65% efficiency of total by utilizing an LNG hybrid engine and a large propeller. Also, it will realize cost reduction by 10-15% compared to existing vessels in the same size when LNG is used as fuel. Through optimization of hull design, daily fuel consumption is anticipated to cut from the current 22 tons to 13.5-14 tons, said the owner.
The Sweden-based owner also mentioned over newbuilding price that the LNG-propelled newbuilding project costs 20% higher than existing vessels however the pricing is reasonable enough since the vessels will become LNG-propelled PCs with the world’s best level of environmental protection.
