The secondhand very large crude carrier market plumbed new depths last week as Japanese ship owner Kyoei Tanker sold its 1999-built, 314,250 dwt Takase for approximately $28m to Greek owner Polembros.
The sale, reported by several brokers, represented a “dramatic drop” in the value of comparable tonnage, according to London-based shipbroker Galbraith’s.
According to London-based broker Clarksons’ weekly sales and purchase report, the $28m price tag for Takase represents a mere $6m premium over the vessel’s scrap value, which amounts to approximately $22m.
