Samsung Heavy Industries of Korea has announced on April 16 that it inked a contract for construction of seven 9,300 teu containerships for KRW 642.9bn (equating to $574m) from a Chilean shipping company, Compania Sud Americana de Vapores (CSAV).
Samsung is reported to have won a total of KRW 1.1trn just in two days after April 15 when it was placed an order for two LNG carriers for KRW 462.3bn.
The 9,300 teu newbuildings are slated for delivery in order by the first half of 2015.
CSAV had booked an order for seven 8,000 teu containerships at Samsung before.
The latest contract is said to include options for several vessels that Samsung is expected to win further contracts.
An official at Samsung has said, “For shipyards, it is important to secure a proper amount of workload for commercial vessels,” and continued, “Through selective contracts, mainly for LNG carrier and large vessel, we are pushing forward to securing stable workload.”
