Japanese net 10 newbuilds
New contracts for export ship during January, 2013, in Japanese shipbuilding industry totaled 530,000GT of 10 vessels, showing 19% decrease compared to a year earlier on a GT basis.
According to a data released on February 15 by the Japan Ship Exporter’s Association (JSEA), the newbuildings contracted last month included one cargo ship, nine bulkers (two Handymaxes, three Panamaxes, two Post-Panamaxes, two iron ore carriers), and 10 of these were ordered from foreign shipowners.
As for the contracts, 10% of them were signed in yen-denominated basis and 90% were in dollar-denominated basis. Also, those gained by trading companies accounted for 84% of the total. For delivery, 25% of them are to be delivered in fiscal year of 2013, 54% are scheduled in 2014 and 20% in 2015.
Meanwhile, a total of 41 vessels of a combined 1.86m gt went through customs in January, which represents newbuildings delivered, showing a similar level as a year earlier’s.
The orderbook of export ship marked 570 vessels of 26.06m GT (11.65m CGT) at the end of January, 2013 with a decrease by 36 vessels of 1.51m GT.
