Rumors are circulating that STX Offshore & Shipbuilding could soon to win an order for mega-containerships of up to 20,000TEU class.
This year ultra-large containership orders have almost ground to a halt but many industry players believe that boxship owners and operators will soon return to shipyards with orders for mega-ships with much higher fuel efficiency.
STX has already developed a 22,000TEU design launched in 2008 but so far has failed to win any newbuilding orders.
The yard is currently building 16,000TEU ships for London owner Zodiac Maritime to be chartered out to Mediterranean Shipping Co.
