Greek owner Alberta Shipmanagement has made its first move into the container ship sector， joining a growing number of traditional tanker and bulker players diversifying their fleets.

Industry databases show the Athens-based company has ordered two 1，930 teu vessels at CSSC Guangzhou Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding， with deliveries set for 2028. The deal reportedly includes options for additional units.

The Inglessis family-backed owner， which operates a mixed fleet of tankers and bulkers， has so far focused its newbuilding activity in Japan. The move marks Alberta’s first Chinese newbuilding contract and its first foray into container shipping.

Founded in 2019 by the fifth generation of the Inglessis family—whose shipping heritage dates back to 1875—Alberta currently controls around 25 ships， including two VLCCs under construction in Japan.

The company’s expansion into container shipping comes amid a broader wave of Greek interest in small-to-mid-size boxships. This year alone， names such as Danaos， Capital Group， Minerva Dry， Chartworld， Latsco Shipping， and Euroseas have all moved to secure tonnage in the 1，700–3，000 teu range.

Several of these players are looking to capitalize on steady charter demand and resilient earnings for feeder and regional container services， even as larger segments remain under pressure.

The so-called Bangkokmax designs ordered by Alberta will be suitable for both intra-Asia and regional Mediterranean trades. It is not yet clear whether Alberta has lined up employment for the ships， Alphaliner noted.
