Chinese Shipbuilder DSIC Delivers Its First LNG Carrier, Sea Spirit
The Chinese shipbuilder Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC), a subsidiary of the CSSC, has delivered its first LNG carrier newbuild, the Sea Spirit, on 24th September.
The vessel has a length of 295 meters, a beam of 46.4 meters, and an LNG storage capacity of 175,000 cubic meters. This capacity can ensure that the city of Dalian remains well-supplied with LNG for approximately one and a half months on a single voyage.
The delivery of this LNG carrier marks a first for both the DSIC Shipyard and the shipowner, CM LNG, which is a subsidiary of China Merchants Energy Shipping. The delivery represents DSIC's first foray into the LNG newbuilding market, a highly technical and challenging segment while for CM LNG, the new vessel initiates the company's clean energy platform.
The vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel, low-speed engine that can operate on both LNG and fuel oil, and it is compliant with the IMO's emission standards. Additional technologies, such as the Silverstream air lubrication system, cut the vessel's drag and increase fuel efficiency.
The vessel also features a GTT Mark III Flex tank that has a low boil-off rate of 0.085%. It is further equipped with a re-liquefaction plant so that almost no LNG is wasted.
DSIC is the third Chinese shipyard, behind Hudong-Zhonghua and Jiangnan, that can produce an LNG carrier. This marks China's growing independence in a market that has traditionally been dominated by Korean shipyards.
