Secondhand Ship Value Fall in December
Facing depressed freight rates, rising oil price and increasing costs, prices of international secondhand bulkers, tankers and boxships saw further decline in December.
In December, totally 97 secondhand vessels finished transactions globally with average tonnage of 55,612 dwt and average age of 12.71 years, falling by 12.83% and 2.87% respectively month on month. 44 bulkers, 35 tankers, 4 boxships, 6 MPVs, 1 chemical tanker, 6 gas carriers and 1 passenger ship were changed hands in the whole month.
The appetite for bulk carrier has again dropped off after international coal, grain and iron ore supply handling the shipments before Christmas. BDI has slipped to three-month low to 1738 and international secondhand bulker price also has declined for three straight months.
According to statistics, the assessment for five-year Capesize, Panamax and Hanymax were $36.34m, $26.30m and $24.94m in December, decreasing by 2.18%, 1.98% and 0.72% respectively month on month. The Market has seen further down side with declining freight rates, falling ship value, abating buyer confidence and frequent holidays in the month.
Total 44 bulkers were recorded changing hands in the month, of which Capesize, Post-Panamax, Kamsamax, Panamax, Handymax and Handysize accounting for 3, 1, 2, 7, 13 and 18. Two Kamsamax bulkers were resold at price 8.33% higher than order value and two Panamax bulker resold at price 1.72% than contract value.
In the period, secondhand tanker price has slowed down the sliding with increasing winter oil demand. The assessments for five-year VLCC, Aframax and product tanker stood at $56.13m, $32.84m and $ 25.57m, 2.40%, 2.83% and 2.42% down against last month.
The transactions of secondhand bulker witnessed little rise in the last month with stable product shipping market and Iraq back to the market as oil supplier. The month saw 35 secondhand tankers changing hands, of which VLCC, Suezmax, Aframax, Panamax and product tanker occupying 3, 4, 4, 6 and 18.
Secondhand containership price went through great downside with few transactions finished. Ten-year 3,500TEU, 1,700TEU and 725TEU were assessed at $27.00m, $12.30m and $7.30m, falling by 15.63%, 14.10% and15.21% respectively compared with last month.
Only four secondhand boxships changed hands in the period.
