Seaspan has booked more 10,000-teu newbuildings at Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding after taking up options on two more vessels.
Singapore-listed Yangzijiang says the firming up of the pair follows a move to take up options on five 10,000-teu vessels a couple of month ago.
Seaspan’s move is no surprise as CFO Sai Chu told investors on its second quarter conference call the company was ready to take more vessels at the yard as soon as charters were in place.
Seaspan turned to Yangzijiang earlier this year with a potential $2.5bn deal which broke the owner’s order duck stretching back to before the financial crisis.
Seaspan and its new venture with GCI now have 14 firm vessels on order at Yangzijiang.
When the contract was announced in June it was for seven firm vessels plus 18 options.
