South Korea's Hyundai Merchant Marine concluded a newbuilding contract of five 13,100-teu containerships with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering on Aug 23.
In a signing ceremony, held at Hyundai group's building in Seoul, president Lee Suk-Hee from HMM, president Nam Sang-Tae from Daewoo and about 20 officials from both companies attended.
Ultra-large boxships are 366.5m in length, 48.4m in breadth, 29.9m in height and would be the largest containerships ordered by Korean owner.
These ships are planned to service in Asia-Europe line with delivery starts from Q1 2014. Also, 13,100 TEUs would also be able to operate in Asia-North America line, as their size is available in Panama canal after its expansion in 2014.
An official from HMM said, "HMM will enhance its global competency by reducing cost and offering higher quality of service with recent ultra-large newbuilding containerships."
