The world’s first LNG-propelled containership is to equip Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s in-house developed Fuel Gas Supply System (FGSS).
Daewoo announced in June 20 that the Korean shipbuilding conglomerate would install FGSS in 3,100 teu containership which is to be built by National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO).
The 3,100 teu newbuild is a vessel ordered late last year by the US-based operator, Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) and planned to equip MAN Diesel & Turbo’s MAN Electronic Gas-Injection Engine (ME-GI) for the first time.
Thus, the containership is recognized to be the first unit in global boxship fleet which runs on natural gas as its main fuel, not bunker oil.
Daewoo is planning to manufacture and supply the system through its subsidiary, Shinhan Machinery after having the basic design of FGSS accomplished.
There are growing needs of transforming into clean energy in every industry area due to stringent international environment regulations in line with the Climatic Change Convention. Hence, LNG-propelled vessels are expected to be one of the greatest revolutions to change the paradigm of shipbuilding industry.
