Sungdong Scores Cape Trio
Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering of Korea has inked a deal for construction of up to three capesize bulkers with Greek shipowner Quintana Shipping.
The newbuildings are two 180,000-dwt firm plus one option, which are due for delivery in 2015.
The order seems to have been contracted in March with newbuilding price of around $47-48m each.
Sungdong had already won orders from two Greek owners in March to build a maximum of 10 capesize bulkers, including three options. The orders were contracted with Alcyon Shipping and Marmaras Navigation to build four vessels (one option included) and six (two options included) respectively, with a total contract value worth $500m. The newbuildings are scheduled for delivery in order from 2015.
Sungdong’s newbuildings are applied with a ‘Green’ Ultra Long Stroke engine which maximizes the efficiency of propulsion system, boasting about 10-15% improved fuel-efficiency compared to existing vessels of the same type through hull optimization. Furthermore, by attaching energy-saving Duct to rear of the vessel, rear flowage could be prevented that energy efficiency is expected to be greatly enhanced.
