Sungdong Scores 10 Capes
Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering of Korea has inked contracts with two Greek shipowners to build a total of 10 capesize bulkers including three options.
The vessels are of four (one option included) from Alcyon Shipping and firm four and two options from Marmaras Navigation. The contract value is said to cost almost $500m in total with deliveries scheduled starting from 2015 in order.
The bulkers are applied with a G-type (‘Green’ Ultra Long Stroke type) engine which boosts the efficiency of propeller. Moreover, they boast a fuel improvement by 10~15% compared to existing vessel types through a vessel optimization. On top of them, an energy-saving Duct is attached to the rear of the vessels to control rear flows, being developed as Eco-ships able to increase energy efficiency.
Meanwhile, an official at Sungdong said that, “Apart from this, we are actively discussing contacts for capesize bulker and special ship, tuna purse seiner.” “We expect the latest contracts to revitalize the market which has been struggling due to a lack of orders.”
