China's Qingshan Shipyard has inked an order with Sinotrans to construct two containerships. Hong Kong-listed Sinotrans will pay $36m for the 1,100-teu pair, a statement says. “Given that shipbuilding costs are currently at a historic low, the company believes that this is the right time to acquire new built vessels to expand its owned fleet and shipping capacity, which would in turn help Sinolines to stabilise its route services and increase its competitiveness in the shipping market,” it told investors. Qingshan will deliver the first of the two ships before November next year with the second following a month later.
