SPP Inks MRs at $35m
SPP Shipbuilding announced today that it recently inked up to six MR product carriers with a European shipowner.
Earlier this month the Korean shipbuilder snared a total of 14 MR product carriers (including options) from several European shipowners. The newbuildings cost around $33.5m per ship, which totals about $470m.
This time, SPP signed six MRs including options for $35m per ship, for delivery in the second half of 2014 and 2015.
Especially, the price of the latest newbuildings is very high, about $2m higher than market prices.
SPP explains the ships will be built to a high specification design and MR PC newbuilding prices are rising in general.
An official from the shipyard said, "As MR PC newbuilding prices are in uptrend, additional orders are also expected."
SPP, which is enhancing cost and quality competitiveness by focussing on MR PC segment, won 28 MR PC orders last year when a total of 55 MRs were ordered. It has so far built and delivered around 100 PCs.
