Korea Controls Ship Emissions
The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs of Korea announced on December 20 that revised Marine environment Management Act would be implemented from January 1, 2013.
According to amended article, ships, weighing over 400 ton and sailing through international routes, should pass an energy efficiency test and place certificates in the ship.
Overall 11 types of vessels, including cargo ship, tanker, boxship, gas carrier, passenger ships, etc., apply to the amended Act.
Adoption of the EEDI means that ships built after 2013 will have to meet a minimum standard of energy efficiency. The standards will be strengthened over time, with the aim of a 10% improvement of ships built in 2015-2019.
15% or 20% for 2020-24 and 30% for ships delivered after 2025.
The government said "With this revised article, we plan to reduce management cost and enhance management efficiency by both reducing emission and improving energy efficiency."
