Capacity growth of global cellular containership fleet will be between 6.5 and 6.7% this year, below initial estimates of 8.3% growth expected in January, Alphaliner said in its recent weekly newsletter.
The demand-supply imbalance has resulted in a surge in scrapping and a new wave of delivery deferrals and slippage.
Alphaliner calculates 135,000 teu of orders rolled from 2012 to 2013.
Deletions have reached 164 containerships for 285,000 teu so far this year, including 273,000 teu that were scrapped.
The average age of containerships scrapped so far this year is at an historical low of 24 years, with 37 ships under 20 years sold for scrap, it added.
