CSSC Eyeing Top Shipbuilder Worldwide
Shipbuilding, as aggregate of modern industries, is called "crown of integrated industry". China's shipbuilding output has kept growing at an annual average speed of over 35 percent since 2002. With shipbuilding output exceeding 10 million ton for the first time in 2005, China becomes an important part in the world shipbuilding industry. Besides the leap in output, China's shipbuilding industry also continuously improves innovation capability and optimizes the product structure. With rapid enhancement of R&D capability and dramatic rise of building level, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), in the spirit of driving the development through scientific and technical innovation, has made great achievements in the field of military and civilian shipbuilding for the last 10 years.
For the last 10 years, with the establishment of modern shipbuilding companies like Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., CSSC Shanghai Changxing Shipbuilding Base and CSSC Guangzhou Longxue Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., the shipbuilding output of CSSC has grown from less than 2 million to 18.64 million DWTs and has occupied the second place in the world for consecutive 6 years.
For the last 10 years, sticking to the primary responsibility of military industry and the tenet of "military product first", CSSC has delivered a batch of new ships and defense products like electronic weapon system and key electronic equipments, provided strong equipment support for the PLA navy to "move towards the deep blue" and built a steel Great Wall for the long coastal frontier of China.
For the last 10 years, in the aspect of civilian ship products, CSSC has transformed from a group building normal types of ships to the one capable of designing and building all types of ships with high technical content like container ship carrying over 10000 containers, large LNG ship and 3000-m deep-water semi-submersible drilling platform, as well as related equipments.
Dramatic improvement of military industrial capability
Sticking to the development guideline of "military product first, combination of military and civilian and containing military into civilian", CSSC, since its establishment, has prioritized the military industrial task with a high quality, kept advancing military industrial system reform, strengthened the concept of defense service and assumed a large number of scientific research and production tasks in military industry including new missile destroyer, missile frigate, missile yacht, conventional power submarine, comprehensive landing ship, electronic weapon system, key electronic equipments, etc.
With a positive attitude toward multiple challenges of short time, heavy task and many cooperative units, CSSC integrates all resources, makes full use of its tradition of overcoming difficulties through teamwork and cooperation, exerts the strongest power and best resource in military industrial scientific research and production tasks, completes the key military industrial tasks and satisfies the urgent requirement of the military for war preparedness, guard duty and training. In the military parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the PLA navy, 14 surface and underwater ships produced by CSSC participated the parade and exercise; in the escort in the Gulf of Aden and Somalia, missile destroyers, missile frigates, comprehensive landing ships and comprehensive supply ships produced by CSSC executed 12 batches of tasks early or late. The ship quality and performance stood the severe test and was highly appraised by officers and soldiers.
Seizing opportunities to optimize the layout
CSSC has for the last 10 years adjusted the strategy flexibly according to market fluctuation, seized two rare historical opportunities including constant rising of the international ship market and urgent requirement for transformation and upgrading of the naval equipments, actively constructed advanced capability and optimized capability layout, demonstrated huge potential and realized a leap in civilian ship industry and naval equipment development. Under the guidance of Medium- and Long-term Development Plan for Shipbuilding Industry of the state, CSSC is rapidly advancing the construction of three national shipbuilding areas in Yangtze River Mouth, Pearl River Mouth and Bohai Rim.
The shipbuilding completion amount of CSSC has grown from less than 2 million DWTs in 2002 to 18.64 million in 2011. With the completion amount of 8.148 million DWTs in 2011, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. became the first shipbuilding company in China with the shipbuilding output exceeding 8 million DWTs and had topped all Chinese shipbuilding companies for consecutive 7 years.
With special attention to various production managements, CSSC continuously shortened the shipbuilding period and substantially improved the production efficiency; with constant enhancement of R&D capability in ship types, wide application of new techniques and methods and steady improvement of product quality, CSSC has set up a good image in the field of global shipping. A batch newly-built shipyards like Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., has reached the world class in several management indexes. Presently, Waigaoqiao's building period of 17,6000-DWT bulk freighter, 20,6000-DWT bulk freighter, and 31,9000-DWT container ship, are 40, 45 and 55 days respectively in the dock and the shortest building period of bulk freighter is only 35 days, which is in a world class.
Significant enhancement of the innovation capability
In recent years, CSSC, in pursuit of hot spots, made full efforts to develop the maritime engineering market, enhanced the independent R&D and system integration capability in maritime engineering equipments, tried to make a breakthrough in key technologies and important equipments, developed a series of products with those achievements on key points, made a lot of breakthroughs in the field of maritime engineering equipment and built and laid a solid foundation for the transformation from big to strong. CSSC has built independently a series of key maritime engineering equipments like the world most advanced 6th-generation 3000-m deep-water semi-submersible drilling platform "No.981 Offshore Oil", the Asian first new generation of 12-cable geophysical vessel "No.720 Offshore Oil" and the world first 3000-m deep-water survey ship "No.708 Offshore Oil" integrating drilling, water engineering and exploration, and provided important equipment support for realizing the state resource strategy and safeguarding the state oceanic right and interest. Presently, the Group has completed the production R&D of a series of key maritime engineering equipments like self-elevating drilling platform, semi-submersible drilling platform, drilling ship, deep-water geophysical vessel and deep-water survey ship, and is gradually forming the industrial chain in maritime engineering equipment from exploration, drilling, exploitation, production to transportation and aims to be the world famous prime contractor in maritime engineering equipments.
Meanwhile, CSSC, targeting the high end, has overcome the high-tech and high-value-added ship technical barriers, improved its capability quickly and broken the foreign monopoly in the field of high-tech and high-value-added ship represented by large LNG ship and container ship carrying over 10000 containers.
Furthermore, the Group has speeded up its pace in development and optimization of ship types in 2012. It developed 8 new ship types and optimized 18 only in the first half year of 2012, which obtained market recognition and reputation. A series of products like "Jiangnan" Panama bulk freighter, "Jiangnan" Cape-of-Good-Hope bulk freighter and Waigaoqiao 308,000-ton super large crude-oil cargo ship designed and developed independently and optimized deeply by CSSC obtains a good reputation in the market.
