Norway's LMG Marin has been awarded a design contract worth €25m ($32m) for 14 deepwater drillships to be built at Brazilian shipyards.
LMG Marin is one of Europe’s leading independent naval architect and maritime engineering companies.
The LMG design is said to be replacing a previous Samsung Heavy Industries drillship concept for the 200-metre units to be built at the Estaleiros Atlantico Sul shipyard, with the design also taken onboard by Jurong Aracruz.
The 14 drillships, costing nearly $800m per vessel and due for delivery between 2015 and 2019, are part of Petrobras' newbuilding program for 28 deepwater drilling rigs.
