Yang Ming Order in Korea?
Korean shipyards are expected to win Yang Ming Marine Transport's 14,000-16,000 teu ultra-large containership series.
Analyst Park Mu-Hyun of E*Trade Securities in Korea pointed out, "Yang Ming pursuing a charter deal can be estimated that the Taiwanese owner is considering to place orders at Korean shipyards."
He pointed out, "Considering cross-straits relations between Taiwan and China, another Taiwanese owner Evergreen could have placed an order at Chinese yard, but it chose Korean shipbuilder, instead."
Park analyzed that Yang Ming seems to have invited tenders from shipyards in China or Taiwan, just to lower shipbuilding price, forecasting "Yang Ming will also select Korean yard with higher technical skills."
Particularly, Park said that the Taiwanese liner seeks to acquire ultra-large boxships in order to strengthen competitive edge, without expecting market recovery.
Korean-built tonnages are improved fuel-efficiency with larger capacity have competitive advantages.
