Greek owner DryShips is cutting bulk carrier tonnage while continuing to expand its ultra-deepwater drillship fleet.
Regarding bulker sector, Mr Economou told analysts in a conference call, “One option is to sell existing ships, or reduce our capital expenditure by not taking delivery of some of the newbuildings or selling newbuildings.”
The company has now 11 bulkers on order at China's Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding.
Meanwhile, DryShips is to expand drillship newbuildings through its 65% holding in Ocean Rig.
Ocean Rig has three drillship newbuildings on order due for delivery from Samsung Heavy Industries next year, plus three options to be exercised by October.
