Italian liner operator Ignazio Messina & C is nearing an order for four more con-ro vessels.
The Genoa-based owner is thought to need the four vessels to replace its ageing fleet.
The deal could involve Messina taking over the slots for a VLCC contract signed in 2008 by Dolphin Tankers, at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding in Korea. That would be converted into an order for the four con-ro vessels, according to Italian sources.
Some Italian sources expect Messina to instead embark on a “Dutch auction” to take advantage of the plight of struggling Korean yards.
