Thenamaris broadens tanker newbuild programme
Greek owner Thenamaris has added more tankers to its growing newbuilding programme, confirming fresh orders in South Korea and China as it continues one of the most active fleet renewal campaigns.
The Nikolas Martinos-led company has confirmed an earlier-reported order for two 50,000 dwt MR2 product tankers at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with deliveries scheduled for 2028.
Alongside the MR tankers, Thenamaris has revealed three 114,000 dwt aframax/LR2 tanker newbuilds at China’s Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC), with the vessels due to join the fleet in 2029 and 2030.
The latest contracts further strengthen the owner’s exposure to the tanker market and lift its overall orderbook to 12 vessels.
The DSIC deal also doubles Thenamaris’ aframax/LR2 backlog. Earlier this year, the company ordered three similar vessels at Hengli Heavy Industries for delivery in 2028 and 2029.
Beyond the latest tanker additions, Thenamaris has two suezmax tankers under construction at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and two LPG dual-fuel very large ammonia carriers on order at Jiangnan Shipyard.
The latest orders extend what has already been a busy period for Thenamaris across both the newbuilding and secondhand markets. The company currently operates a fleet of over 90 vessels, more than half of which are tankers.
