Koreans Score Offshore Rigs
Orders for offshore drilling rigs, such as drillship, semi-submersible drilling rig, etc., become heated again.
Following after South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries having contracted one drillship and one optional more from Seadrill of Norway early last week, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering booked an order for two semi-submersible drilling rigs from Songa Offshore of Norway on May 3 and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries secured 1+1 semi-submersible rigs from Seadrill on May 4, for the first time since its establishment.
Analyst Huh Sung-duk at Hi Investment & Securities said on May 7, "While oil majors are actively involved in field procurement due to high oil price and newbuilding price for drilling rig has decreased, orders for offshore rigs will grow further, as rig owners in need of additional rigs, with high charterage guaranteed, would place newbuilding rigs."
Daewoo, which is very competitive in semi-submersible rig sector, should be noticed, Huh announced.
Moreover, Hyundai Samho's first contract for offshore facility is drawing attention and is expected to buckle down to advance into offshore plant business.
