Boxship Orders Tumble
The newbuilding market has kept weakening since the beginning of this year and containership sector has seen the bleakest pictures. Shipyards are likely to face a gloomy 2012.
According to the report from Clarkson, only one boxship was ordered globally in the first two months at a price of $54.0m.
In 2011, the containership newbuilging market has witnessed a brilliant boom with the total new order value amounting to $223bn. However, the conditions have come to a standstill and suddenly turn to dismal performance since 2012, which reflecting the downturn in shipping freight market.
In recent years, container newbuilding has gone ups and downs with the global economy and shipping market changing. After the historic peak in 2008, the 2009 boxship market saw an overall standstill. Since 2010, the market has gradually warmed up and come to a new boom in 2011 with Maersk beginning to order 18.000 TEUs. A boom of mega boxships orders befalls the shipyards worldwide by 2011.
However, the containership newbuilding output is still high in the period while the new ordering activity keeps silent. According to the database from Clarkson, totally 13 boxships of 94,022teu were delivered in February and 27 containerships of 178,333teu delivered since the beginning of 2012.
Clarkston predicts that about 1,200,000teu’s and 1,500,000teu’s capacity would be delivered separately in 2012 and 2013, which means that numerous ordered will not be delivered as scheduled.
