US-based McDermott International has taken delivery of Amazon, a converted J-lay vessel, from shipbuilding company Royal IHC.

The transformation of the J-lay vessel is now complete, following an intensive and successful sea trial programme.

With a dynamic top tension capacity of 1,500t, the patented system has the ability to handle different pipes, for example, normal flowlines, export lines and pipe-in-pipe configurations, ranging in size from 4.5in to 25in in diameter, as well as inline assemblies.

The vessel is equipped with advanced automated onboard operation processes for improved safety performance and production efficiency.

With a capacity to produce hex joints from single or double joints in the multi-joint facility, Amazon is claimed to be McDermott’s only J-lay vessel with a holding capacity of 10,000t of pipe on board.

Royal IHC CEO Jan-Pieter Klaver said: “Completing the Amazon conversion has been challenging at times. However, we remain incredibly proud of her and the teams on both sides whose collaboration made this possible.”

“This project compelled us to design a one-of-a-kind system, with specifications that can redefine the pipelaying industry and the world’s understanding of what is possible in ultra-deepwater construction.

“Redelivering the Amazon is the outcome of dedication, knowledge and passion of all those involved.”
