Chemical tanker newbuilding prices would remain depressed despite expectations for improved earnings, DVB says.
Strain will also be seen in secondhand ship values regardless of anticipated improvements in demand and an easing of supply following heavy scrapping during the past three years, the bank explains in a report.
DVB says a new 17,000-dwt IMO II/III tanker was worth around $25.8m in 2011, compared with $26.3m in 2010.
“The decline in newbuilding values is due to more yard space becoming available,” the bank said.
“We expect the newbuilding values to further decline in 2012 to $24.5m for this size category and pick up thereafter.
