Asry is in a joint project with UK technology firm Centrax to design and build power barges.
Bahrain-based Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard has teamed up with a UK-based power technology outfit, Centrax, to design and sell power barges.
With the growth in demand for short-term power sources in areas under development, the two businesses are hoping to sell barges that have twin Rolls-Royce gas turbines, the Trent 60, which can produce a total of 125 MW.
The move further extends Asry’s portfolio away from a single focus on direct ship repair and conversion.
It has already diversified into offshore maintenance and repair. The Bahrain facilities are also due to finish the construction of a new $188m 1.38 km repair quay later this year as it faces increased competition in the region. The first half of the quay came into operation in February. It will give Asry the capability to handle vessels of up to 30,000 dwt.
