Structural Changes of Global Shipbuilding
Global shipbuilding market is now occupied with abundant orders thanks to the last peak season of the industry. However, insider analysis indicates that some small and medium shipyards may face market elimination in future.
Norwegian shipbroker Lorentzen & Stemoco put forward that the current workload for many shipbuilders are at the peak due to the abundant orderbook and severe delays in financial crisis.
Some big Korean shipyards even have three-year workload on hand at present. On the contrary, some shipyards are confronted with bankruptcy risks without current hot containership, LNG carrier and offshore orders.
Lorentzen & Stemoco said that some shipbuilders may carry out “low-than-cost” competition for the sake of enterprise survival.
At the moment, the operating rate of global shipbuilding industry has reached as high as 90%, a new high since 2000. And the shipbuilding capacity worldwide is expected to rise by 160% in the next ten years on the current basis of 47m GT.
