A newbuilding order for two pure car carriers for Norwegian owner Arne Blystad at Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Industry Corp in Vietnam has collapsed.
According to overseas media reports, the owner did not lift subjects on the deal for the 6,900-car-equivalent-unit (ceu) vessels, which was announced in a fanfare of publicity last month.
The preliminary contract was announced by Vietnam’s deputy prime minister, Nguyen Sinh Hung, at a cermony at which he said the business represented the trust of the Norwegian government and the country’s shipping companies in state-run shipbuilder Vinashin, which was restructured last year after piling up debts.
The ships were due for delivery in October 2013 and April 2014 from the Vinashin-affiliated yard and had a price tag of $55m each.
