Korea Boosts Cruiseship Industry
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries released a Plan for Revitalizing Cruise Industry to strategically promote the nation’s cruise industry on July 17, together with related governmental agencies, the Ministry of culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and etc.
The plan was reported at a meeting held under the chairmanship of the President Park Geun-Hye for expanding tourism promotion. The plan could be arranged through the convergence of various opinions from related departments, local governments, port authorities, tourism organizations, industry players, professionals, and so on, suggested for the past three months.
According to the revitalizing plan for cruise industry, the government decided to stimulate the cruise industry into a new future growth industry considering the high growth rate of cruise market and the effect of employment promotion, ripple effects on related industries, such as shipping, shipbuilding, aviation, tourism, and so on. Also, the body will set four propulsion strategies and they are; expanding attraction of overseas cruises, establishing infrastructure for complex tourism behind, promoting cruise operators with Korean nationality, enforcing capabilities of cruise industry and so on, and exceed 14 detailed accompanying assignments.
Particularly, to solidify capabilities of cruise industry, the government plans to increase R&D supports related to cruise ship construction so that domestic builders are able to participate in building the high-value vessel, cruise ship, which accounts for 20% of global shipbuilding order value.
