The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China has released a ‘Scientific research project guideline for high-tech vessel 2013’ and suggested three major processes and professional items - 1. Test process for environment protection via energy saving, 2. Clean energy engine, 3. Ships specialized with high-tech technology - recommending 18 main directions of research, such as marine equipment, basic technology and standard, preemptive study for new international regulation and so on.
MIIT announced that the guideline will promote innovation ability with encouraging industrial development and aim to improve competitiveness in an international market in the basis of ‘Upgrade plan for industry transition (2011-2015)’ and ‘The 12th 5-Year industrial development plan for vessel’.
The guideline is intended to lower more than 40% of daily energy consumption, enhancing environment protection level further than existing vessels.
As for research direction for clean energy engine, process development for hybrid engine with medium speed will be pushed forward together with high speed engine running on natural gas by 2015. MIIT is planning to proceed with creating a demonstration model to go through an actual operation.
Lastly, in terms of ships specialized with high-tech technology, the ministry will carry on research and development for LNG-fueled ship, ice-class multipurpose vessel, very large car carrier, cooled liquefied ethylene carrier and etc.
