Newbuilding prices which seemed to be stabilizing could possibly drop by up to 10% additionally by the end of 2013.
According to Danish Ship Finance (DSF), newbuilding prices will likely bottom out at about $1,450 per CGT, which is close to the level seen in 2002.
DSF says that global shipbuilding capacity showed just a 3% of fall last year, however, prospects that small and medium-sized shipbuilders could confront restructuring due to a lack of orders this year and next that eventually global yard capacity could decrease by 20-30%.
Newbuilding order intakes are unlikely to show a strong recovery tendency over the next one to two years; particularly containership is expected to go through the biggest difficulty of all.
Containership owners believe that they will see ship prices continuously decrease as the imbalance of fleet supply and demand is getting worse.
Meanwhile, the value of 10-year-old 3,500 teu vessel plunged by 44% last year, which represents 70% drop comparing with the one at the market peak in 2008. The value of a five-year-old vessel of the same size was 32% lower while 15-year-old one showed a 50% drop last year.
Newbuilding prices also fell by 20%, which led shipyards’ profits to drop to almost ‘zero’. DSF noted that newbuilding prices appear to reach construction costs and the yards capable of building containerships is limited that newbuilding prices can be said to approach the bottom level or close to the bottom. Also, DSF added, “We hope this will not result in any other newbuilding order boom.”
Newbuilding orderbook of container vessel is currently standing at around a combined 3m teu, which represents much more than market demand, and half the orderbook is scheduled to be delivered within this year. DSF said that the newly designed ultra large containerships are to be operated in Asia-Europe route which seems “the verge of death” already.
