With shipping industry which is not yet strong enough, an illusion effect has appeared that shipbuilding industry is seen as if it is firstly recovering.
Newbuilding order intakes in global shipbuilding industry during the first three months this year have improved by 44% comparing with the first quarter of 2012. Amid Chinese shipbuilding industry showing a move to a recovery, China’s newbuilding order intakes were a combined 5.03m dwt in January and February and 9.57m dwt from January to March, having shown increases of 1.9% and 71.1%, year-on-year, respectively, according to latest statistical data from China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI).
However, during the first quarter, deliveries from Chinese yards decreased by 15.6% with orderbook having also declined by 24.6% that it is said to be still too early to be optimistic when taking deliveries and orderbook into account although Chinese industry has shown a rise in new orders.
An official at Chinese shipbuilding industry has said that earnings performance last year was too poor as the bottom level that the recent increasing move can easily be seen as remarkable. Thus, it is too early to take an optimistic view although 2013 is in a better situation than last year, it is not as good as 2011’s.
Another official at CSSC Guangzhou Longxue Shipbuilding, requests or visits regarding newbuildings have been frequent from shipowners and related people however, new order intakes have not that notably increased. Many shipbuilders went through hardships in winning orders, deliveries and making profits last year and net profit of Longxue‘s listed shareholders was reported to be CNY 26.87m, sharply down by 98.81% year-on-year.
