Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K line) today announced an order of five ultra large container vessels at Imabari Shipbuilding Co Ltd.
The ships are intended as eco friendly replacements for existing vessels within the K Line fleet and the company anticipates increases in both efficiency and cost competitiveness as a result of the ships' introduction.
The five 13,870 teu ships will have a length of 366m, a beam of 51.2m, a depth of 29.9m and are estimated to be delivered in 2015.
The vessels will dwarf K Line's current-largest ships which stand at just 9,000 teu.
The price of the vessels has not been revealed.
