Jan-Feb Scrapping Slashed
January and February of 2013 saw total amount of demolition shrank comparing with the same months in 2012.
During the first two months of this year, 7.8m dwt were sold for scrap, against 9.9m dwt a year ago, according to Clarkson Research.
Aside from capesize and aframax tankers, other sizes of tankers saw lower demolition. Capesizes and aframaxes posted 2.3m-dwt and 700,000-dwt scrapping, comparing with 1.2m dwt and 500,000 dwt, respectively. During the same period, no VLCCs have been sent for scrap, while 1.1m dwt were scrapped last year, and only two suezmaxes were sold for demolition so far against 1m dwt recorded in the first two months of 2012.
As for bulker, total demolition of panamaxes and handymaxes were cut in half this year against the first two months of 2012, while handysizes' demolition appears to be almost as same as those were scrapped a year ago.
