It is said that victims from Chinese builders’ advance in offshore segment will be Singaporean companies while Korean shipbuilders will rather be beneficiaries.
Park Moo-Hyun, an analyst at E*Trade Securities of Korea, has said that considering since Chinese shipbuilders having won jack-up drilling rigs in succession and the competition is getting intense amid firm demands, the victims will be Singapore-listed rig builders, Keppel and Sembcorp Marine.
The two builders’ profitability in offshore segment was estimated to be up to 25~30% in the past; it fell to low 10% last year.
He added that, “Korean shipbuilding industry can expect the ease of competition in commercial ship, especially medium sized, as China is focusing on drilling facilities, such as jack-up rigs.”
And said “When it comes to offshore segment of which Korean builders usually win contracts, not much direct competition with China is expected.”
Park said that the demand for Eco-ship with enhanced fuel-efficiency has increased since 2011 in commercial ship market and this attracts design competition among shipyards. Also, as China focuses on offshore, efforts in investment and development in commercial ship segment could be decreasing;
Thus, the high value segment in shipbuilding industry can be said to be medium sized Eco-ship with less competition forecasted, by considering decreasing profits in offshore segment.
