Global shipbuilding industry's newbuilding orderbook has decreased greatly but new orders are not expected to be added to the backlog any time soon.
Drewry presented scenarios on the projected newbuilding requirement in its World Shipbuilding Annual Review & Forecast report.
But only under the High Case scenario is there a requirement for further newbuild ordering beyond the orderbook as of early 2012.
Under Base Case projection, in almost all ship sectors the size of the orderbook more than exceeded the newbuilding requirement to 2016.
The short-term prospects for the global shipbuilding industry are therefore bleak, Drewry said.
