LNG-carrier newbuilding investment is holding back a little after massive orders close to 50 vessels in 2011. However, new order activity in LNG carrier segment will see another growth in 2013.
Analyst Lee Sok-Je of J.P. Morgan prospected that around overall 40 newbuilding LNG carriers will be ordered next year, which represents around 50% increase from 26-27 orders contracted in 2012.
Due to growing demand, newbuilding prices will also rise up to around $220m per ship by the end of 2013, up by 12-13% from current prices of $195m-197m.
He explained "We expect a sharp rebound of LNG carrier orders followed by a growing competition for remaining slots among ship owners" and continued strong won will boost prices as well.
Also he prospected that growing demand for LNG FSRU to boost the competition among ship owners for the remaining slots.
Lee added "To meet required demand for LNG carriers with upcoming completions of LNG liquefaction plant in 2015, 2016 and even for 2017, we expect 40 ships will be contracted in 2013 followed by bigger orders in 2014."
