The number of shipyards which ran out of newbuilding order for the past six years has reached up to around some 700 around the world.
According to Clarkson, 108 shipyards completed the delivery of their orderbook in 2011, doubling the number that did so in 2007.
About 160 shipbuilders have delivered their final newbuilding on order year-to-date and 117 additional yards are expected to see the bottom of orderbook during the rest of this year. Therefore, overall 277 shipyards would come to have no vessels on order this year alone.
The number of shipyards which delivered their last newbuilding on order marked some 70 in 2008, some 100 in 2009 and 2010. A cumulative of some 700 yards have completed delivery of the final vessel since 2007.
Clarkson said that 178 yards would see their last newbuilding delivered in 2013, on the assumption that there will be no new order contracted.
While 32% of active shipyards located in China, 68% of yards that have finished the delivery of their orderbook in the year-to-date have been based on China.
