Shipowners Keep on Investing in Secondhand Vessels
Priced attractively, modern and with prompt delivery dates, second hand vessels are proving to be rather popular among cash-rich ship owners these days, as is proven by the latest weekly reports from shipbrokers. According to the latest report from Clarkson Hellas, it was yet another busy week in the dry cargo second hand vessel market across all sectors, which according to the shipbroker are a buy in for many owners, which is also leading to increased competition on the ships being marketed for sale.
"In the Capesize market this week, the Japanese controlled M/V GREAT PHEASANT (178,820 dwt 2000 blt Hyundai) is reported to have been sold to Greek interests at levels in the mid 17’s. Moreover, undisclosed buyers are reported to have purchased the M/V AQUABELLA (161,010 dwt 1995 blt Hyundai) for a level in excess of US$ 11m with DD freshly passed.
In the panamaxes, the geared panamax M/V PACIFIC PIONEER (69,279 dwt 1994 blt Hashihama) has been sold to Chinese interests for US$ 7.2m. Undisclosed Greek buyers have acquired the handymax M/V CB ADVENTURE (46,232 dwt 2002 blt Oshima) for a firm level in the mid 13’s. The handies has also seen a significant amount of activity this week. Clients of Norden have three modern handysize bulkers, namely the M/V NORD AARHUS, M/V NORD ANTWERP and M/V NORD DUBAI (all about 33,230 dwt 2012, 2011 and 2011 blt respectively in Hyundai Mipo) for an enbloc price of US$ 60m to clients of Dalex, Greece. Elsewhere in the handies, the M/V SPEAR FLOWER (29,738 dwt 2003 blt Shikoku) has been sold for US$ 11.2m to clients of Pacific Basin while the older M/V ACE BRIDGE (28,419 dwt 1999 blt Imabari) has been sold to Greeks for US$8.5m.
In the Tanker S+P market, following a lengthy sales process the new building resale LR2 M/T WHITE STARS (114,700 dwt 2012 blt Samsung) she may have finally been committed to Greek Buyers. It is interesting to note that in the early stages of the process the ship struggled to receive indications in excess of US$ 40m and yet we now understand that a sale may have been agreed in excess of US$ 42m. The M/T PACIFIC HARMONY (69,999 dwt 1999 blt Namura) reported sold to Bumi Armada for a price in excess of US$ 10m.
In the MR tankers, the Morfini-owned product carriers, M/T FANTASIA and her sister M/T ELECTA (51,433 / 51,118 dwt 2009 blt SLS) are committed to Mexican interests at US$ 28.5m each on subjects. The LPG carrier “BRITISH CONFIDENCE” (54,490 dwt 2006 blt Mitsubishi) has been concluded at US$ 55m to undisclosed buyers" Clarkson Hellas concluded.
In a separate report, Lion Shipbrokers said that on the dry bulk market, "ore carrier AMY N (322K BLT 1997 DAEWOO/S. KOREA) was reported sold to the usual suspects, clients of Sinokor of South Korea for the price of $25 mill while capesize resale SPICE (176K BLT 2012 JINHAE/CHINA) was committed to clients of Rizhao Steel of China for $33.5 mill. Greek buyers have paid a firm $95.2 mill for the en-bloc acquisition of four modern TMT’s resales ex-Hyundai shipyard namely C MAX, D MAX, E MAX, F MAX (4 X 84K BLT 2011 HYUNDAI/S. KOREA) while remaining three units H MAX, K MAX, J MAX (3 X 84K BLT 2012 HYUNDAI/S. KOREA) were snapped by South Korean interests for $75 mill en bloc. In an off market deal, Mitsubishi’s panamax PERLA BULKER (76K BLT 2007 TSUNEISHI/JAPAN) went to undisclosed interests for $17.8 mill. Having being circulated in the market for a long time, geared & grab fitted panamax PACIFIC PIONEER (69K BLT 1994 HASHIHAMA/JAPAN CR 4X25T 10CBM GRABS) has finally found Chinese buyers who agreed to pay $7.2 mill for her. We picked up that Enesel’s supramax THALASSINI AXIA (58K BLT 2010 SPP/S. KOREA CR 4X36T) is committed in excess of $21 mill to Greek buyers (hearing clients of JME Navigation), meantime may we remind you that her two sisters THALASSINI KYRA & THALASSINI NIKI (58K BLT 2010 SPP/S. KOREA CR 4X36T) were sold back in August in excess $22 mill each also to Greeks. Japanese controlled handymax CB ADVENTURE (46K BLT 2002 OSHIMA/JAPAN CR 4X30T) is rumoured sold for $13-$13.5 mill to Greek buyers (hearing clients of Ikarus). Chinese buyers continue their shopping spree for scrap related tonnage; mid-eighties handymax ATLANTIC MIGHT
(42K BLT 1985 MITSHUBISHI/JAPAN CR 4X25T LDT 8275) went for $3.4 mill which translates to about $410 per Lt. Three modern handy resales NORD ANTWERP & NORD DUBAI (33K BLT 2011 HYUNDAI/S. KOREA CR 4X30T) & NORD AARHUS (33K BLT 2012 HYUNDAI/S. KOREA CR 4X30T) are reported sold en bloc for $60-$61.5 mill levels to clients of Dalex of Greece (about $20-$20.5 mill per ship). Clients of Pacific Basin are said to be behind the sale of Japanese controlled handy logger SPEAR FLOWER (29.7K BLT 2003/JPN 5HO/5HA CR 4X30T 2XGENERATORS) for $11.5 mill.
Containers: APL of Singapore have disposed two panamax units this week; APL IRELAND (67K BLT 2003/JPN 5928 TEUS) went for $25 mill to undisclosed buyers while older APL GARNET (66K BLT 1995/S.KOREA 4729 TEUS) went to clients of Diana of Greece for $30 mill including 34 months time charter back to Sellers at an undisclosed rate. Clients of Mandarin Shipping of Hong Kong have bought en bloc geared sisters KOTA MEWAH & KOTAH MEGAH (2 X 28K BLT 1997/S. KOREA 2105 TEUS CR 4X40T) for $5.8-$6 mill each while their other sister KOTA MESRA (28K BLT 1997/S. KOREA 2105 TEUS CR 4X40T) went to clients of Tribini Capital of Hong Kong for $6.2 mill" Lion concluded.
