35 Drillships to be Signed
As new order for drillship are to be continued in 2013, Korea's major shipbuilders are expected to receive biggest benefits.
Choi Kwang-Sik, analyst from LIG Investment & Securities said "Additional seven drillships are to be contracted during the rest of this year and there will be drillship demand for 35 vessels in 2013."
He analyzed that "If Korean shipbuilders will regain 90% shares of global drillship market, Korean shipyards are expected to book for overall 32 newbuildings in 2013."
Considering demand for drilling on the basis of worldwide deep-sea mining area and the fact that newbuildings are to be placed three years before the time of operation, 2012 is expected to see 38 orders for drillships and 2013 will see 35 orders.
Of 31 drillships contracted so far this year, Brazilian owners have awarded overall 15 vessels in domestic shipyards and the rest have gone to Korean shipbuilders.
With an assumption that there will be no orders from domestic yards, Korean shipbuilders' drillship market share is expected to rise up to 90% and ink a total of 32 drillships, 40% more than those contracted in this year - 16 already signed and seven to be contracted.
