Reviews on China Secondhand S&P Market (8.27-9.7)
With the weather turning bright, more and more vessels reenter normal services, intensifying the overcapacity problem. At the same time, the decline of power consumption and coal shipping further drives down the freight rates down. As a result, auction activities of secondhand ships increase greatly in the period, especially for bulk carriers. It is rumored that a 2005-blt 5,000dwt bulker is traded at a shocking auction price lower than CNY5.0m. Besides, a shipbroker reveals that a 2002blt ZC-classed 4,200dwt bulker which was originally put for sale at CNY4.2m would be auctioned by marine court due to owner’s debt issue.
Recently, buyers from South East Asia are looking for 5,000dwt and smaller bulkers in China. Besides, there are buyers enquiring about 10,000dwt MPP for domestic routes.
The indices and prices for different secondhand bulkers witness different declines in the period. Despite buyers’ passion in secondhand bulkers, their expectations for “the lowest price” further depress the asset value.
Domestic oil shipping market remains stable despite of the price growth and oil consumption decrease. The secondhand tanker transactions are also relatively stable in the period. The enquiries for 600dwt bunkers and 1,000dwt dirty tanker are active, however sales information for such tanker are rare and owners may have to book new vessels. At the same time, 3,000dwt tankers, including Grade I tankers and Grade III DH tankers with heating equipment, are also the hot ship type among buyers.
In the last two weeks, a new-built 4,500dwt tanker is reported changing hand. The price is not disclosed, but insiders point out that the assessment for the ship is about CNY29.0m.
The index for five-year 3,000dwt tankers rises slightly against the growth of market demand while index for three-year 5,000dwt tanker keeps the downturn momentum.
In the period, demand for MPP is relatively strong. Some overseas owner is looking for 200TEU containership or MPV with Japanese or European main engine. Besides, there are domestic owners enquiring about cheap 1,000TEU or smaller MPVs.
In offshore sector, some brokers are enquiring about Z-propeller tug and AHTS. The profits for operating the ship type have been narrowed with more tugs entering services, but the future is still hopeful with the government increasing its investment in offshore market.
Coastal passenger ships of 30 meters are still market hot type which is suitable for regular shuttle services.
