Newbuilding containership orders are expected to triple year-on-year in 2013.
Macro Report analyst Philippe Hoehlinger said “Historical observations have proved that shipping lines start to order significantly when the orderbook represents close to 20% of total fleet.
“However, we believe that the percentage from which carriers may be likely to order again will be closer to 18% this time.
“In 2012, we expect a total of 316,000 teu of new orders and 1.1m teu in 2013. 2012 new orders have been revised down due to declining demand.”
Boxship newbuildings on order as a percentage of current fleet are expected to reach 20% by the end of 2012 and 16% by the close of next year.
