Investment in Eco Ship to Grow
Investment in newly-developed eco-friendly vessels is expected to grow.
Analyst Park Mu-Hyun of Korea's E*Trade Securities said on July 24, "Maersk Line, which has invested in Green ship from ten years ago, has reduced around overall $90m of fuel costs during the last three years (2009-2011)."
He added, "Maersk has already prepared for eco-friendly tonnages in mid 2000 and started to optimize its operation from 2009."
Lower fuel cost makes Maersk more cost competitive by cutting rates and expanding market shares.
Park said, "Since 2011, those newbuildings placed for orders at Korean yards have changed much, including engine, ship type, etc. Broader ship increases volume, which eventually improves costs and increases rate profits."
Also, he said, "When rates go down through reduced cost and taxes, operators could increase market share. Investment in fuel-efficient eco-friendly vessel is necessarily grow."
