Teekay Eyes Wind Farm Work
Teekay Corp has floated the idea of moving into the wind farm installation business using some of its existing shuttle tankers.
The tanker, FPSO and LNG operator gave details of the concept at an investor’s day in New York on Monday.
Under the proposal it would convert existing shuttle tankers into wind farm foundation installation vessels.
Teekay says its harsh weather operating experience and its dynamic positioning (DP) expertise make it a natural area of expansion for the company.
The shipowner says its shuttle tankers are well suited for conversion for the role with their DP capability and large deck space.
Teekay, which is the world’s largest operator of shuttle tankers with 40 ships, says converting ships also extends the operational life of the asset.
In a presentation entitled ‘exploring adjacent offshore markets’ it claimed that the use of converted shuttle tankers could reduce wind farm installation costs by up to 30%.
