Chinese shipowner EGPN Bulk Carrier is continuing its push deeper into the tanker sector after placing an order for two MR product carriers at Chengxi Shipyard.

Industry sources said the vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2029, adding to a growing tanker orderbook that marks a significant shift for the company, which built its name in dry bulk shipping.

The Hong Kong-based outfit has steadily broadened its activities beyond dry cargo trades over the past three years. The company has built a presence in tanker shipping through both secondhand acquisitions and newbuilding investments at Chinese yards, while maintaining a sizeable dry bulk fleet, through owned and chartered in tonnage.

The MR tanker order at Chengxi follows the company’s move into the larger product tanker segment. Last year, EGPN contracted two 115,000 dwt LR2 product tankers at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. group yard, Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding. The company has also been busy in the secondhand market, offloading four MR newbuildins to Scorpio Tankers at $45m each.

For Chengxi, the contract adds further tanker work to a diversified orderbook. No contract value was disclosed. However, current market pricing for modern MR product tanker newbuildings is typically estimated in the $50m-$51m range per vessel, suggesting the deal could be worth close to $100m in total depending on specification and equipment.
