Vietnam’s Hai An Transport and Stevedoring has stepped up its fleet expansion drive with an order for its largest containerships to date.

The Hanoi-based shipowner has contracted Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC), part of China State Shipbuilding Corp, for up to four 7,100 teu vessels.

The deal was placed through Hai An Green Shipping Lines, a recently established joint venture between Hai An and its major shareholder Viconship. Pricing and delivery details have not been disclosed.

The newbuilds form part of a six-ship series recently unveiled by DSIC, which also includes two vessels each for two European owners. DSIC has now accumulated 14 orders for its 7,100 teu class, cementing its position as a key builder in the fast-growing mid-size container segment.

The order comes as Hai An accelerates its expansion into larger vessel classes. Earlier this year, the company signed up for up to four 3,000 teu ships at Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding, with the first deliveries due in late 2027. Those vessels are designed to be scrubber-equipped and methanol-ready.

Founded in 2009, Hai An operates a fleet of nearly 20 containerships trading mainly in intra-Asia routes. Before this year’s push into larger tonnage, the company last ordered a series of 1,800 teu ships at Huanghai Shipbuilding between 2021 and 2022.
