China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) is eyeing the small-scale LNG-carrier sector.
Industry sources say group company CNOOC Energy Technology & Services is looking into the design of a series of 30,000-cbm vessels.
The company, which has been working on the project for some time, is understood to have a requirement for four vessels for delivery dates in the 2014-2015 period.
Design is being done in-house. There is expectation that a tender for the vessels could be floated soon.
The potential to use small-scale LNG carriers has been attracting interest worldwide but there are currently only a limited number of vessels available.
Observers say they could make sense for CNOOC, which has a network of LNG-import terminals in operation along the Chinese coastline.
The company is also looking at adding three floating LNG-import terminals to be located off Tianjin, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces to the mix.
