Ireland’s Arklow Shipping has reportedly booked two 35,000-dwt handysizes and a general cargo vessel at Daesun Shipbuilding & Engineering in South Korea.
Arklow is paying a premium for the ships against more competitive pricing from China. Brokers price the Daesun handysizes at around $25.5m, which compares to similar deals in China at around $22m.
In early November, Daesun Shipbuilding & Engineering announced it has recently inked newbuilding orders for 2+2 35,000-dwt bulkers and 1+2 vessels of 14,000-dwt general cargo vessels from a shipping company in Europe.
Daesun reveals that 14,000-dwt general cargo vessel and handy bulker cost $22m and $25.5m with delivery by H1 and H2 2013, respectively.
